Grace (@lavera.grace) is my pick for today’s talent!
If you don’t know what A Year on Talents is here you can find the description of the project: A Year on Talents Project
Grace is an artist based in Australia, she draws and paints in digital, most of the times, and primarily focuses on portraits or full characters of ladies, fairies, mermaids and so on. The occasional nature painting, or male figure, the couple, some animals and such are present but rare I would say.
Out of all the styles she uses I think the one that gives me the impression of a fantasy book illustration is also the one I like the most. It’s not just the drawing cause the palette and the way she uses the colors influences the overall look of the painting and helps me visualize it in the right context. Now that I said it tho I realize there isn’t such a “right context” if I’m the one making it up in my mind, but I mean, the fact that she makes it easy to create an environment in which you can imagine her character living in is cool and I like that experience.
The first painting of the mermaid is superb! I love the tone she used in this one, the clean lines and I think the hair perfectly “capture the environment”. Being underwater is something that is not going to be easy to represent if you choose to not paint the background, but I think that’s what the hair were able to do here for me, they suggest a place to picture the figure in just cause they are flowing the way they are. That’s what I was talking about you see? I make up the places sometimes but it’s a guided tour and I like it!
The second pic is yet another mermaid, at the falls this time around. This piece deserves a long zoom in so I hope you’ll find the time to take a look at all the work that was put into this artwork by Grace. Don’t focus only on the character, there’s much to discover in the water and the background too.
What do you think about Grace? Do you also love what’s going on here?
