Karl James Mountford (@karljamesmountford) is my pick for today’s talent!
If you don’t know what A Year on Talents is here you can find the description of the project: A Year on Talents Project
Karl is an illustrator based in the UK, he works with traditional as well as digital medium and does a lot of book covers. I really enjoy looking at his profile because I quite literally try to do one thing they always tell you should not: judge books by the covers! Come on tell me you never did it, you never let a book go because the cover wasn’t interesting enough or on the contrary you never took one to read more because it was really the image that was attracting, more than the title itself. I’m a lover of art and beauty so I can’t say that, I definitely grade book covers and like the idea I can buy a copy just cause of that.
Luckily for all the authors who chose Karl as their illustrator I’ve yet to come by a picture that’s not interesting or that’s not catching my attention for the pure image style over the title. I can’t know if the books are well written, but they’re definitely looking fabulous!
The first pic is for a 90’s TV shows exhibition and on IG you can see three different versions of it, there’s a pink-green one and a yellow-violet one on top of the first you see here. I personally like them all, if I had to chose I’d probably waste a lot of time! Besides the art which I find very cool all the color pairings he tried fit very well together, it’s a nice piece! (and it also reminds me of my childhood a bit, I wasn’t a fan but I sure watched some episodes)
Talking of TV shows I’m a fan of, Stranger Things is surely up on the list! This piece he made is so good, I adore the upside down and even the protagonists are very well done, they’re all super recognisable while maintaining a particular style. Great choice of colors, another awesome result!
What do you think about Karl? Do you also love what’s going on here?
