Karla Castaneda (@heymkjoe) is my pick for today’s talent!
If you don’t know what A Year on Talents is here you can find the description of the project: A Year on Talents Project

Karla is a freelance illustrator, on her profile there are plenty of artworks in both digital and traditional mediums. Often enough the style she uses for her portraits is a toonish one, but there are also some more realistic pieces here and there.

One thing I noticed is that she uses to paint or draw something “strange” on her characters pretty often, like there’s not gonna be many normal characters on her feed.. you are going to see a special trait or a funny pose more often than not. I also appreciate her quick and frequent turning from a kind of painting to another one, she masters many styles and is not afraid to switch over, even if it means bouncing back and forth from traditional graphite on sketchbook to digital painting on the ipad!

The first piece is a commission for @affinitybyserif, the software she used to paint it! I really love the light effect and the clean finish this artwork has. After looking at the girl the crows started being interesting and I realized “everything else” is a crow! That surprise effect was very nice and I liked all the angles they come from and the details they have. Bonus points for all those little eyes, they give the creepy look they are supposed to.

Second image is a redraw from a piece she originally made in 2010!! This one too is not shy on “strange” things to look at, but as far as the painting goes and the technique she used I really love the light spots on the cheek, the lips and the nose, I think they add a lot despite being so little in comparison to the whole art. It’s a cool painting!
