Scott Gwynn (@scottgwynn) is my pick for today’s talent!
If you don’t know what A Year on Talents is here you can find the description of the project: A Year on Talents Project

Scott is a concept artist and illustrator based in Utah. He works both digitally and with traditional mediums to produce more often than not very cool and funny characters. A particular thing about his feed is that he isn’t shy in showing the practice, the exercises, all the sketches, the doodles and whatnot.

I feel that’s an important part for every artist and “we” tend to practice a lot on our own only putting out there what we think are our best results… When in the end looking at all the posts Scott has on IG the studies and the quick sketches are as good to look at as everything else to me! It makes me feel good and I think I should grow under this aspect and do that more often.

After this kind of introduction I couldn’t start with anything other than the first image here, “sketches and exploration” from Scott inspired by the fantasy novel “The Phantom Tollbooth”. Look at how much work there is sometimes behind a single character that maybe you’re going to see one or two times in the book (hopefully more!). This shows many poses were tried, many faces were drawn, a style, expressions and a way of moving were thought before a final piece could hit the canvas and look so good. If you want to build good stories with great characters and have them look real this is the way to go.

The second piece is stunning if you think it’s markers and colored pencils on copy paper. I absolutely love the figures and in particular those messy grey hair. He also found a way to almost make it look like a digital artwork. It might be the pic itself, but I think the way he colored this one is so clean and hits some sweet spots, I like it.

What do you think about Scott? Do you also love what’s going on here?
